The
most effective way for a homeowner to protect a child's play
area from rattlesnakes is to construct a rattlesnake-proof
fence around it. Install a gate that is tight-fitting at the
sides and bottom, equipped with a self-closing spring.

One of the
best ways to discourage rattlesnakes from inhabiting gardens
and homes is to remove suitable hiding places. Heavy brush,
tall grass, rocks, logs, rotten stumps, lumber piles, and
other places of cover should be cleaned up. Keep weeds mowed
close to the ground or hoe them out completely. Since snakes
often come to an area in search of prey, eliminating rodent
populations, especially ground squirrels, meadow voles, deer
mice, rats, and house mice, is an important step in making the
habitat less attractive for snakes. Rattlesnakes cannot dig
burrows but frequently use those dug by rodents. After
controlling the rodents, fill in all burrows with soil or sod
and pack down firmly. Snakes will not remain in habitat made
less favorable for them.
Rattlesnakes
may seek refuge beneath buildings and outbuildings. If there
is a gap or opening, they will enter and inhabit a building or
crawl space, just as house mice do. Sealing all cracks with
openings greater than 1/4 inch, or installing a screen barrier
with 1/4 inch wire mesh can prevent them from entering these
areas. Gaps beneath garage, and other doors are often large
enough to permit snakes to enter, especially young ones. Tight
fitting doors will prevent snakes from entering, as can adding
weather stripping.
The venomous bite of a rattlesnake is a tool for hunting and killing
their prey. The venom not only kills their prey but also
begins the digestive process by breaking down the tissue.
The following photo is an example of what could happen if
bitten in the hand, not to mention that a rattlesnake bit can
be fatal.
